What Are the Different Types of Cloud Computing?

Conceptually, cloud computing came about in the 1960s through a process called time-sharing. Time-sharing lets multiple users share digital resources over several networks all at once. It refers to the earliest forms of the virtualization of data-related tasks.

Today, we call it “the cloud” because of Andy Hertzfield, one of the founding creators of Mactintosh. In a 1994 interview with Wired, he called this “the entire Cloud out there, where a single program can go and travel to many different sources.”

Since then, cloud computing has become more advanced and offers many different digital services for both organizations and average civilians. Keep reading to learn about the different services offered by cloud computing.

What Are the Types of Cloud Computing Network

Depending on your needs (and budget) cloud computing can be deployed in different ways. It allows you access to one or more networks. Users can access central processing units (CPU), data storage, software apps, and many development tools.

Public Cloud

Public clouds are designed for public use. These cloud computing networks are created by a company that functions as the overhead. They handle the administration and upkeep of these public networks.

Users do not have any control over managing or making changes. Public clouds rely on a pay-as-you-go structure. This means that you pay a small fee every time you want to use a public cloud network. Consumers also can access many public cloud services for free. Either way, they provide easy and open access for users with internet. For businesses, it cuts down on IT expenses.

Private Cloud

Private clouds set up an online network exclusive to one organization. Companies have much more administrative control over the cloud network. In-house IT employees or departments manage private cloud systems.

Companies sometimes hire third-party vendors to host private clouds. This means the outside company has full control over services and data centers. Private cloud computing costs more. Private clouds let companies protect sensitive data with limited access. They have control and access to database centers. Private clouds let companies follow security compliance.

Businesses can also use both private and public networks through hybrid clouds. To do this, they create a virtual private network or VPN. These private channels take the best parts of public and private cloud networks.

Community Cloud

Community cloud refers to a private cloud network shared publicly across several users and/or organizations. You can also call this type of cloud deployment a multi-cloud network. Usually, companies or users who perform similar functions and have common goals rely on a community cloud.

Like private clouds, community clouds are also managed by IT departments or outside vendors. It creates an interdependent system to connect companies. This helps them share data centers. The following industries most commonly use community cloud networks:

  • Healthcare
  • Banks
  • Trading companies

The Three Main Cloud Computing Services

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is used as part of private cloud networks. Companies using IaaS pay for a foundational infrastructure network. This provides virtualized management of databases and servers. This cloud service recreates a physical infrastructure network using the cloud. Examples include Microsoft Azure Virtual Machine (VM), Rackspace, or Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) creates the framework. PaaS sets up the operational systems programmers use to develop frameworks for mobile apps, software programs, and database systems. It allows multiple programmers to build and collaborate without needing an entire infrastructure. Examples include Google Cloud SQL and AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

Software as a Service (Saas) refers to cloud-based software programs predesigned with access to special applications for end-users. SaaS performs specific functions for companies and is ideal for typical employees with no programming background. Examples of SaaS include MailChimp, Salesforce, Slack, and Google GSuite.
